Classic Devonian Fish Localities and Historic Newberry Collections in Ohio

Explore Ohio’s rich paleontological heritage on this full-day field experience to classic Devonian fish localities and historic collections associated with pioneering paleontologist J.S. Newberry. Participants will visit renowned fossil sites for hands-on collecting while gaining insight into the region’s significance in early vertebrate history, followed by a behind-the-scenes look at the Newberry collections housed at the Orton Geological Museum. This immersive trip offers SVP 2026 attendees a unique opportunity to connect field discovery with museum research in one unforgettable day.

Any collecting will comply with the SVP Code of Conduct, including permission to enter properties, permission to collect with all materials going to either The Orton Geological Museum or the Cleveland Museum of Natural History.

Recommended clothing or items to bring
Sturdy shoes/boots for quarry, warm clothing (average temperatures are 53-34F, snow has occurred as early as late October), rain gear, gloves, and hard hats.

Transport by van will be provided.
