UK Dinosaurs: History and Science
Sunday, November 16 - Tuesday, November 18
Dinosaurs were first discovered and named in the UK, and 2025 marks the bicentenary of the naming by Gideon Mantell of lguanodon, the second dinosaur discovered. In this three-day trip led by Richard Butler (University of Birmingham) and Susie Maidment (Natural History Museum), we will visit classic and new Jurassic and Cretaceous dinosaur localities in Oxfordshire and on the Isle of Wight, visit key museums, and explore important historical sites. Stops will include some or all of the following: the Dewars Farm dinosaur track site, the Oxford University Museum of Natural History, classic Cretaceous localities such as Compton Bay and the Hypsilophodon bed on the Isle of Wight, Dinosaur Isle Museum, Down House (home of Charles Darwin), the Crystal Palace dinosaurs, and the Natural History Museum, London. The trip will begin in Birmingham on the morning of Sunday 16th November immediately following the SVP meeting and finish in Oxford or Birmingham late afternoon of Tuesday 18th November. Two nights of bed and breakfast accommodation (on Sunday 16th and Monday 17th), transport by coach including the ferry crossing to the Isle of Wight, and entry to museums are included, but participants will have to cover their own lunch and dinner.
