Paleontological Field Medicine: A Simple Kit, A Clear Plan, A Safer Dig

This practical workshop will introduce field medicine as an expedition-specific extension of wilderness medicine. We will review the most common exposures in paleontological fieldwork using a simple framework, the 4 T’s (Tools, Terrain, Temperature, and Toxins), then teach a memorable, high-consequence model, Bleeding, Breathing, and Heeding (where heeding includes bites and stings, venoms, irritant plants, chemical and dust exposures, lightning cues, and heat cues). Participants will assemble and take home a “Paleontological Medicine Field Kit” designed to handle approximately 90 percent of common field issues, including waterproof fabric knuckle bandages, duct tape, whistle, flashlight, tick removal card, poison ivy wipes, trauma shears, and nitrile gloves, along with a one-page reference and a 60-second safety brief card.
