About the Society Awards Past Award Winners 2019 Awardees 2019 (Estes Memorial Grant) Kaleb Sellers

Kaleb is a PhD candidate at the University of Missouri in the Integrative Anatomy program. His research interests include the biomechanics and evolution of transitional structures, with particular interest in the evolution of the modern crocodylian skull from fossil ancestors. Fossil crocodile ancestors display a transition in the morphology and function of the feeding system, and Kaleb has been using biomechanical modeling to understand how these skulls worked. Such techniques are uncovering the relationship between muscle anatomy, joint anatomy, and the biomechanics of feeding. Funds from the Estes Memorial Grant will be used to travel to museums to capture morphologies of fossil pseudosuchians and to make biomechanical models of their skulls.
