About the Society Awards Past Award Winners 2017 Awardees 2017 (Taylor & Francis Award) 1st Place - Ornella C. Bertrand

I completed my bachelor’s degree in biology at the University of Nancy, France. After, I pursued a Master in Paleontology, Paleobiology and Phylogeny at the University of Montpellier (France) where I studied Eocene fossil hyracoids and the phylogenetic relationships of Asia and African hystricognath rodents. After my Masters, I obtained the Annette Kade Fellowship from the American Museum of Natural History in New York City and worked with John Flynn, and collaborated with Andr√© Wyss and Darin Croft. I expanded my Master’s work on hystricognath rodents and study the relationships with their closest relatives, South American caviomorph rodents. In 2012, I started my PhD with Mary Silcox at the University of Toronto (Canada), and focused on the endocranial anatomy of fossil rodents and the ancestral condition for the brain of Euarchontoglires (including rodents and primates). This work allowed us to obtain the first virtual endocasts for fossil rodents and show that the brain of the ancestor of rodents and primates was actually very similar.
