About the Society Awards Past Award Winners 2015 Awardees 2015 (Hix Preparator's Grant) Amon Mugume

Mr. Mugume was born on 23rd April, 1983.  He completed his primary and secondary school training in the Mbarara District of Western Uganda, and received a Bachelor’s Degree in Biomedical Laboratory Technology from Makerere University in 2011.  He has also received formal technical training in Computer Applications, Statistical Analysis, and in Museums Collections Care Management.

He is currently employed by the Uganda National Museum, as an Assistant Conservator in the Natural History Section.  He is charge of the Natural History Collections, which includes working with the paleontological collections on a regular basis.  He coordinates and facilitates visitors to the Museum seeking to work on the collections, and also regularly participates in fieldwork and accessioning of the vertebrate fossil collections for northeastern Karamoja District.

Mr. Mugume takes an active role in training interns and acting as a scientific and cultural interpreter, dealing frequently with the public. He is fluent in five local Ugandan languages and English, and has conversational French.  He has a long-standing and deep interest in the natural world that extends from the cultural history of his native Uganda, to modern botany and zoology, as well as to the fossil record, and is thus ideally suited to his job as museum conservator.

For the future, Amon hopes to receive additional training to work more directly with paleontological collections.  He is also in the first year of a Master’s Degree program at Makerere University, where he is pursuing studies in ecology, including paleoecology.
