Esteemed Friends and Colleagues of the Society of Vertebrate Paleontology,
It is an honor to welcome you all to the 71st Annual Meeting of the Society of Vertebrate Paleontology to be held in Fabulous Las Vegas, Nevada!
The Host Committee consists of individuals from a number of institutions, with expertise in many facets of southwestern vertebrate paleontology, and we look forward to highlighting this information-rich region to you. During the course of the meeting, there will be field trips to Paleozoic and early Mesozoic marine units, terrestrial Mesozoic units in southern Nevada and Utah, and famous Cenozoic deposits in and around the Las Vegas Valley. We sincerely hope that you will be able to join us on one of these fantastic trips that we have in the works. In addition to the offered field trips, we have made arrangements with several known regional institutions for comparative collections visits.
Las Vegas is a premiere travel destination, offering top-notch restaurants and accommodations, world class shows, and much more. Travel to Las Vegas is typically inexpensive if you book early enough, every major carrier flies into McCarran Int'l Airport (code: LAS) which is just minutes away from the host hotel. If you are traveling by car, the host hotel sits on the Las Vegas Strip, less than a mile off of Interstate 15. Chances to escape the hustle and bustle of the city abound: you can easily drive to Red Rock Canyon National Conservation area for some world-class rock climbing or hiking; Hoover Dam is less than an hour away; Valley of Fire State Park is roughly an hour north of town; and Zion National Park is less than three hours away. For visitors from the North, a trip to Vegas in October is always a great opportunity to thaw out for a bit.

About the 2011 Annual Meeting Logo
The 2011 Society of Vertebrate Paleontology Annual Meeting logo was designed and illustrated by paleo-artist and paleontology undergraduate Lee Hall of Montana State University-Bozeman. The centerpiece of the logo is fashioned after the "Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas" sign, a landmark listed on the United States National Register of Historic places and which has been welcoming visitors to southern Nevada for more than 50 years. As a special welcome to the Society, we have incorporated this welcoming landmark into the logo. Wreathing the welcome sign is a skeleton of the ichthyosaur Shonisaurus popularis, Nevada's state fossil. Since this is the first SVP meeting in the state, we found it appropriate to highlight this animal. An entire state park is dedicated to this animal which will be a field trip location for the meeting. To represent and acknowledge the support and efforts of the southern Utah members of the host committee, a Eubrontes track appears as the suit on the hand of cards. Eubrontes is a prominent dinosaur track found in and around St. George, Utah and will also be highlighted by field trips during the meeting.
Although the logo contains icons which have been associated with gambling, SVP and the host committee in no way advocate or support such activities.
