Grand Staircase Mining Grab

June 22, 2018
A mining claim has been staked in an important fossil bearing area of Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument.  The claim by a Canadian company is in the Circle Cliffs area that was excluded from the monument last December by President Trump.  The mining claim is in the fossil-bearing Triassic Chinle and Moenkopi formations near areas that have yielded the largest petrified forest outside Arizona and a remarkably preserved poposaur skeleton.  SVP is legally contesting the reduction of the Monument.  "Grand Staircase Escalante was created to protect paleontological resources," said SVP President David Polly.  "Claims like the one at Colt Mesa threaten scientifically established sites that were protected within the Monument until last year."
