Peter Lawrence Forey (1945–2016)

January 25, 2016
Peter Forey was one of the world’s leading palaeoichthyologists and at the forefront of the cladistics revolution in the 1980s. Together with Don Rosen, Colin Patterson and Brian Gardiner, he was known as one of the ‘Gang of Four’ whose arguments in favour of phylogenetic systematics as a guiding principle in evolutionary biology earned them opprobrium and praise in equal measure, with the added benefit of being firmly on the winning side of the debate. As a result, Peter could have claimed to have been one of the guiding lights in vertebrate palaeontology in general, although he was far too modest and self-effacing to do so.

Peter began his career under the training of Brian Gardiner at the University of London (Queen Elizabeth College), earning his PhD on elopiform fishes, a group he continued to work on throughout his career. Following the completion of this work, Peter moved to a position at the University of Alberta in 1972, where he remained for three years before returning to the UK and a post at the Natural History Museum, London (NHM). He spent the rest of his career (and a productive retirement) at the NHM, forming part of a dynamic research group based on what is still the world’s largest collection of fossil fish, and was also head of fossil vertebrates for a time. While at the museum Peter continued collaborations with his colleagues Colin Patterson and Brian Gardiner as well as furthering several projects of his own. Of these he is probably best known for his pioneering work on coelacanth taxonomy and evolution, as well as other major projects on lungfish, jawless fish, placoderms and a variety of teleost groups. Although primarily a systematist and taxonomist, Peter made important contributions to phylogenetic theory and palaeobiogeography, with over 120 publications, many of them monographic in scope.

Gregarious and good company, Peter was a true meritocrat who dealt with everyone he met in an open, friendly way, sharing information and helping generously wherever he could. He had a major influence of the development of modern palaeoichthyology and mentored many of the younger researchers who are now established leaders in this field. His influence also extended to other vertebrate palaeontologists in the UK and beyond. In addition to his scientific work, Peter was an immensely talented artist, who taught painting in his spare time, although this might come as no surprise to those who’ve seen the superb drawings he prepared for his descriptive papers. A true gentleman, he will be sadly missed by all those who knew him and the museum, and the field, are poorer places for his absence.
