Membership Types

All members are required to sign the SVP Code of Ethics statement.  All memberships include full online access to the Journal of Vertebrate Paleontology - the most widely read journal in the profession - as well as voting rights (excepting Junior Members). Except where indicated, members may choose to receive a print subscrition to the Journal of Vertebrate Paleontology for an additional charge (included with Emeritus and Developing Country memberships).

Membership Descriptions

Undergraduate/Graduate Student Member
Students must provide a valid university or college identification card as well as an advisor or authorized academic official's signature.

Transitional Early-Career Member
Offers a discounted rate for 3 years to current renewing Student members who are approaching the end of training to help bridge the gap between the academic and employment years.

Second Member
Available to individuals living in the same household as an existing member.

Emeritus Member
Avaliable to SVP members who are retired from formal employment and have been a member of SVP for thirty years (not necessarily continuous).

*Developing Country Member
Available to persons currently residing in a developing country as defined by the Least Developed Countries list created by the United Nations Committee for Development Policy. To view the current list of eligible countries, click here.

Institutional Membership: A Program for Institutions of Developing Nations
To increase access to electronic-based publications and news of the Society of Vertebrate Paleontology (SVP) for institutions based in areas with developing economies. See the Institutional Membership Web page for more details.

Junior Member

  •  Open to individuals between 14-17 years of age (as of January 1 of the year of application).
  •  MUST transition to another form of membership upon turning 18.
  • A parent or legal guardian must sign this application and agree to the ethics statement and all membership requirements.
  • Applicant must provide a 250-500 word typed personal statement stating why they are interested in becoming a member of the Society of Vertebrate Paleontology (SVP).
  • Applicant must provide a letter of reference from a teacher, SVP Member or other person in the field of paleontology or a related field. 
  • Junior Members do not have voting rights.
  • Eligible to receive the Student Member registration rate for attendance at SVP annual meetings. In order to complete registration for the SVP 2020 Virtual Meeting, Junior members require the written approval of a parent or guardian to attend the online meeting, and confirmation that the Junior member will be supervised by a parent or guardian at all times when engaging with online meeting content.   • All memberships are processed on a calendar year basis with a start date of January 1 and an end date of December 31. Memberships are not pro-rated.
  • Dues paid prior to the conclusion of the Fall SVP Annual Meeting are applied to the current calendar year. Dues paid after the conclusion of the Annual Meeting are applied to the next calendar year. You must be a member of the society for the current calendar year to receive meeting registration discounts.
  • Dues payments are non-refundable.

SVP Donor Membership

By adding a donation to your membership dues, you’re helping to ensure the continuation and growth of our education and advocacy programs. Contributing, Sustaining, Partner, and Patron members are recognized in the Program Book and on signage at the SVP annual meeting. An acknowledgement of your donation and status as a Donor member will be sent to you.

  • Contributing Member $100 addtional donation
  • Sustaining Member $250 additional donation
  • Partner Member $500 additional donation
  • Patron Member $1000 additional donation
