Dear SVP Member,

I want to thank you for your membership and ongoing support of SVP, and encourage you to renew your SVP membership for 2008-09. Renewing your membership ensures that you'll continue to have access to the Journal of Vertebrate Paleontology (JVP) and to enjoy lower member registration rates to SVP events. Also, your prompt renewal helps us spend less on administration and more on programs and services for our members.

Here are some of SVP's achievements for the current membership year. SVP now has over 2,300 members from 52 countries. We have initiated the first SVP-sponsored Field Conference to occur August 5-7 in the Hanna Basin, Wyoming. The SVP Web site includes a timely SVP news area, with archived copies of all e-mail blasts. All of the back issues of the JVP will soon become available to SVP members free, through a Web link on the Members-only web page to JSTOR and BioOne.

Coming attractions include a climate forum for SVP members and the public at the Cleveland SVP meeting, the first overseas annual meeting in Bristol, England in September 2009, increased support for student travel to the Bristol meeting, a new program to provide opportunities for scientists from developing countries to attend the annual SVP meeting (starting with the 2009 meeting), and creation of a DVD about SVP that highlights our society, our members, and our annual meeting. (The rough cut, viewed in early June, is terrific!)

This year, we have an IMPORTANT MEMBERSHIP YEAR CHANGE! SVP's normal membership year has been October 1 through September 30. The Business Office and Executive Committee have decided that SVP will benefit from a membership year that coincides with the calendar year, and that transition begins this fall. In order to move to a calendar year, (January 1 through December 31), SVP must have a 15-month year from October 1, 2008 through December 31, 2009. Dues have been pro-rated for this 15-month year. With regard to the Journal of Vertebrate Paleontology (JVP), subscribing members will receive five (5) issues of the JVP during this 15-month membership year.

I also request that you consider making an additional contribution to one or more of our program and scholarship funds that are listed on the online member renewal form. By making a contribution to one of SVP's funds, you're helping to ensure a strong future for vertebrate paleontology. If you make a donation of $145 or more (in addition to regular member dues of $140), you will be recognized in a special member category. Your gift will be acknowledged in the SVP News Bulletin, in the third 2008 issue of the JVP, and in signage at the 2008 annual meeting.

NEW! SVP has instituted a new Vertebrate Paleontology Education and Research Fund that will be used to support new and continuing educational and research programs with broad benefits for the society. This fund conforms will provide resources to support the best new ideas that come along.

Your continued membership with SVP benefits each of us with an array of scientific, professional and career resources. Thank you.

Sincerely,

Catherine Badgley
President, SVP

To renew your SVP membership for 2008-2009, follow these instructions:

1) Go to the SVP Web site and log in to the Members' Only Area.

2) Once logged in, look for the link at the left side that says "Dues Reminder." This should appear just below the "Edit Password" link. If you do not see the "Dues Reminder" link, it means you are not logged in, or your dues have already been paid.

3) Click on the "Dues Reminder" link. After you have read through the introduction page, you must agree to the Ethics Statement clause to proceed to the renewal form.

4) On the dues renewal form, we have set up the mandatory dues, which must be checked, along with the optional donation categories. Each donation category can be checked/selected if you wish to make a contribution. If you choose to make a donation to a fund, there is a suggested minimum contribution amount of $10.00 USD. With each donation, the total price displayed at the bottom of the list of items will increase.

5) If you have any questions, you can call the SVP business office at 847/480-9095, or e-mail us at svp@vertpaleo.org.

The Executive Committee would like to make clear that the decision to review the allegations brought by Martz, Parker, Wedel, and Taylor was made solely in response to their letters addressed to the SVP President, as per our stated procedures. Our decision to review the case was made before the Nature article was published or the correspondence had been posted to the internet; we did not review the case because of "blogs" or other forms of written or verbal communication. We would not have investigated the matter if we had not received a written request asking us to do so.

We encourage all SVP members to discuss ethical concerns amongst themselves. In this particular case, however, private correspondence was made public without the permission of either sender or recipient, which put the ethics education committee in a difficult position. As public discussion increased and involved more people, so did the chance that members of the Ethics Education or Executive Committees would be placed in an inadvertent (and avoidable) conflict of interest and be forced to limit their involvement in the case. Care must be taken to ensure that "open communication" does not derail efforts to remain comprehensive and impartial.

If students or others continue to have concerns over our statements and their intent, we recommend that that they organize a faculty-student discussion seminar that focuses on our posted statements and the National Academy document (On Being a Scientist). Face-to-face discussion is often the best way to resolve misunderstandings and ambiguities.

PRESS RELEASE - Animal Burrows in Antarctic Tell of a Much Warmer Past

Deerfield, IL (June 2008) - Today Antarctica is a harsh world. Devoid of trees and bushes, it is largely covered in snow and ice and battered by frigid winds. There are no land-based backboned animals that inhabit modern Antarctica – all of the penguins and seals that we imagine on the Antarctic ice are dependent on the sea. But this isolating Antarctic icebox is relatively new in geological terms, and new fossil finds are shedding light on what Antarctica was like 250 million years ago.

In the latest issue of the Journal of Vertebrate Paleontology, Chris Sidor of the University of Washington and his colleagues Molly Miller of Vanderbilt University and John Isbell of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee report the discovery of a number of fossilized burrows of land-living animals in Antarctica and paint a picture of an ice-free world. The first type of burrow was found in the Beardmore Glacier region, approximately 400 miles from the South Pole. It is almost 250 million years old and resembles burrows known in South Africa of a similar age. The South African burrows have been found containing the fossilized skeleton of cat-sized mammal-like reptile called Thrinaxodon. The burrow from Antarctica “was probably made by the same type of animal,” commented Sidor. The second type of burrow is of a smaller variety and was discovered in an area known as Victoria Land. Again, comparison with similar burrows in South Africa provides clues to the original inhabitants of the burrow. Miller noted that they were probably made by “mole-sized reptiles known as procolophonids. But until we find the animal in the burrow we can’t be sure. It’s also possible that they were made by juveniles of larger animals.”

Isbell noted that 250-200 million years ago the world was a very different place and “as far as we can tell the poles remained ice free.” That is not to say that the winter months were balmy. The latest fossil finds from the polar regions certainly provide strong support for this view. “The burrows were probably important shelters for these animals,” added Sidor. The burrows and dens add to the important record of life that existed on Antarctica before the ice.

The *PRPA Needs Your Action
*Paleontological Resources Preservation Act (HR 554 - McGovern MA)

To the Members of the Society of Vertebrate Paleontology:

On Wednesday, May 14, 2008 the House Committee on Natural Resources met in open markup session. One of the bills considered was the "Paleontological Resources Preservation Act" (HR 554 - McGovern MA). An amendment in the nature of a substitute to bring criminal penalties in line with the "Archaeological Resources Protection Act" (ARPA) was offered by Representative Grijalva (AZ) and was agreed to by voice vote. The bill was favorably reported to the House of Representatives, as amended, by voice vote. We are pleased of the current progress and the amended version of the bill as it extends the necessary protection of this valuable scientific resource.

SVP has worked for several years to pass this important legislation. I urge you to write your Representative today in support of HR 554. Letters carry more weight than e-mails, so it would be beneficial if you would go to the extra effort of sending a letter. Model letters can be found on the SVP Web site at: http://www.vertpaleo.org/education/government.cfm .

Your support letter will arrive faster if you fax it in addition to mailing the hard copy.

CHICAGO, IL (March 2008) – When most of us think of Ancient Egypt, visions of pyramids and mummies fill our imaginations. For a team of paleontologists interested in fossil mammals, the Fayum district of Egypt summons an even older and equally impressive history that extends much further back in time than the Sphinx. In the latest issue of the Journal of Vertebrate Paleontology, these scientists report on the discovery of six new bat species dating to around 35 million years ago, which sheds new light on the early evolution of bats.

It took over 25 years of fieldwork to collect the 33 specimens that form the basis of the new study. “That translates to a little over one specimen per year – a lot of effort for a single fossil,” said Erik Seiffert, a paleontologist at Stony Brook University. “But it shows just how important patience and long term field programs are to science. Our long-term commitment to field work certainly paid off in this case.” Among the new species is “a giant among bats; though weighing in at less than a half-pound, it is one of the largest fossil bats ever discovered,” said Gregg Gunnell, a paleontologist at the University of Michigan.

Fossil bats of Eocene age are rare in Africa. Only a few fragmentary remains from Egypt, Morocco, Tanzania and Tunisia were previously known. The discovery of six new kinds of bats illustrates the remarkably rich, and previously unsuspected, diversity of bats in Africa 37-34 million years ago. These discoveries provide important new information for understanding the evolution of modern bat families. It was thought that most Old World families of bats evolved and diversified in the northern hemisphere, but the new study indicates that many modern bat families only diversified and radiated after their initial dispersal into Africa. Seiffert noted that the Fayum bats include members of the most common and widespread group of living bats, “Clearly the modern bat families have very ancient origins, and at least some of them probably originated in Africa.”

Elwyn Simons of Duke University said, “Interestingly, it seems that primitive modern bats may have entered Africa together with primitive anthropoid primates. Only then did they diversify and disperse into the rest of the Old and New Worlds.” Gunnell hopes that “if we can come to understand the history of how bats came to be so intertwined within our ecosystem, then we can begin to appreciate them instead of fear them as many people seem to do.”

Halszka Osmólska (1930–2008)

It is with deepest regret that we announce the death of professor Halszka Osmólska on March 31, 2008, at the age of 78 years, after a protracted and serious illness. She was born on September 15, 1930 in Poznań, Poland. In 1952 she graduated from the Faculty of Biology and Earth Sciences of Poznań University, after a three-year course in biology. Halszka then moved to Warsaw, where in 1955 she was granted the degree of Master of Biological Sciences at the University of Warsaw. In 1962, she earned a PhD in Biological Sciences at the Faculty of Geology, also at the University of Warsaw.

Beginning in 1955, Halszka worked for more than 50 years at the Institute of Paleobiology of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw, progressing from assistant professor to full professor. In 1974 – 1983 she was the deputy director of the Institute, and in 1984-1989 the director. In 1975 – 1992 she was the editor of Acta Palaeontologica Polonica. Osmólska was a member of various scientific societies and committees.

During the first half of her scientific life, Halszka was engaged in studies on the Late Devonian and Carboniferous trilobites of Poland and Eurasia, becoming a well-known specialist on them. Beginning in 1969, she changed her scientific interests and started to study the Late Cretaceous dinosaurs and other reptiles from the Gobi Desert, soon becoming an authority in this field as well. She is a co-author and co-editor (with David B. Weishampel and Peter Dodson) of the widely acclaimed book “The Dinosauria,” published by the University of California Press. The first edition of the book was published in 1990, the second in 2004.

Halszka worked with great purpose, entirely devoted to science. She had a very kind and serene character, and was well known for her sense of humor and modesty. She had a long and happy family life with her late husband Tadeusz, and left behind a son, daughter-in-law, and three grandchildren. Halszka made substantial contributions to paleontology, contributions that will stand as an enduring legacy. She will be missed and long remembered by those of us who knew and loved her.

The 9th North American Paleontological Convention (NAPC-2009), will be held on the campus of the University of Cincinnati (Cincinnati, OH), June 21-26, 2009. The centrally-located Cincinnati region is world renowned for its Upper Ordovician fossils and strata, and has a long-established heritage of paleontological research and teaching.

NAPC provides an opportunity to bring together an unusually wide range of scientists with a common interest in the history of life, and the organizing committee is planning a slate of activities to provide a memorable experience for all participants. There will be a variety of regional field trips; a plenary session commemorating the bicentennial of the birth of Charles Darwin and the sesquicentennial of the publication of "The Origin of Species;" workshops on the creationism/evolution controversy and other topics; an evening banquet at the Cincinnati Museum Center; a special social event for students and postdocs; and numerous other social and educational activities. Pending procurement of funding, the organizing committee expects to be able to offer deep discounts for students. A conference Web site has been established at http://www.napc2009.org/ , where preliminary details can be found, including information about on-campus facilities and housing. The Web site will continue to evolve as additional plans for the meeting are developed.

The organizing committee is currently soliciting proposals for symposia, which will form the backbone of the meeting. The deadline for proposal submission is September 15, 2008. Please note:

--Symposium organizers must identify a minimum of eight invitees who have agreed to participate in the proposed session.
--All talks at the meeting, except for plenary-session presentations, will be fifteen minutes in duration.
--When abstracts of talks are submitted beginning in Fall 2008, authors will have the opportunity to volunteer their submissions to symposium sessions that are not already fully subscribed with invitees (16 presentations for a half-day session).
--Symposium organizers will have the option of sponsoring an accompanying poster session.

Because the electronic-submission site, which can be accessed at http://www.napc2009.org, was constructed for submission of talk abstracts, a few items might seem a bit confusing. Therefore, "author" and "co-authors" really mean "convener" and "co-conveners". In addition, "abstract" really means "symposium" throughout the submission pages. If symposium proposers have any questions or problems they should feel free to contact Dr. Arnold I. Miller (arnold.miller@uc.edu ), chair of the NAPC organizing committee. Upon submission of a proposal, an e-mail should also be sent to Dr. Miller to ensure that the submission is viewed promptly. Submission of abstracts of presentations will commence during Fall, 2008, with a deadline of February 12, 2009.

In addition, the organizers are soliciting proposals for field trips, to take place immediately before or after the meeting, or on the planned mid-week "break" day on Wednesday, June 24. Interested parties should contact Dr. Carl Brett (brettce@email.uc.edu ), who will be organizing field trips.

We hope to see you in Cincinnati for NAPC!

Hanna and Carbon Basins, South-central Wyoming — Cosponsored by The University of Wyoming, Department of Geology and Geophysics
August 5–7, 2008
General theme — “The Importance of Field-based Geological Documentation to Paleobiological Research”

Co-organizers: Jay Lillegraven, Jaelyn Eberle, Pennilyn Higgins, and Mark Clementz

Principal Scientific Goals for the Conference:

This conference centers on special opportunities, as gained uniquely through the field study of rocks, to the discipline of paleobiology. The trip will be practical, emphasizing on-site examination of documented examples involving fossil vertebrates in detailed geological context. How did regional tectonism (expressed through changing sedimentary sources, appearance of well-defined basins, development of various nonconformities, and influences of superficial versus deep-centered faulting) affect our stratigraphic interpretations? In turn, how did post-depositional modification of physical stratigraphy affect our interpretations of organic evolution and biogeographic change through geologic time? How did basin evolution influence ancient geochemical environments, and how did that complex interaction affect the bias, or even the very existence, of a fossil record? In what new ways can stratigraphic sampling for isotopic geochemistry be used in concert with traditional biostratigraphy to help accept or reject claims of temporal correlation within and among basins? Looking broadly, how reliable are existing stratigraphic studies upon which so much of our interpretation of North American vertebrate evolution depends? Is field-based research still necessary in the 21st century, or has enough already been done on this continent and elsewhere? Do theoretically oriented specialists in paleobiology really need sophisticated knowledge about the strengths and limitations of procedures in field geology?

General Background:

The field conference will involve three day-trips (conducted from the town of Medicine Bow) to parts of the Hanna and Carbon Basins. These relatively tiny, Laramide basins in south-central parts of Wyoming have long been recognized for their astonishingly thick sections of marine and nonmarine, Upper Cretaceous and Paleocene strata. Originally, the Hanna and Carbon Basins were interpreted as discrete centers of deposition that had separate geological histories. We now recognize, however, that they represent eastern depositional components of an originally unified, enormous Green River Basin that secondarily became subdivided during the Eocene by deep-centered, basement-involved faulting. Because of regional contractional relationships, the eastern Hanna Basin exhibits the most complex structural history of any basin in the Rocky Mountain region. Recently mapped, out-of-the-basin thrusting is ubiquitous and magnificently expressed along the margins of adjacent uplifts. Such faulting greatly affects interpretations of local stratigraphy. Incontrovertibly superpositional assemblages of fossil vertebrates have become increasingly important in dating parts of local Paleocene sections, in testing the reliability of North American Land Mammal ‘Ages,’ and in recognizing the taxonomic nature of transitions from one NALMA to the next. Geological essentials related to paleogeographic interpretations (paleobiological and geological) of basin subdivision will constitute an important introduction to detailed features to be observed in the field.

Principal Localities to be Visited and Topics of Discussion:

Day 1 — ‘The Breaks’ (northeastern corner of Hanna Basin). Big-picture geologic setting; how to tell an erosional unconformity from a fault; what out-of-the-basin thrust faults look like; problems in documenting such thrusts; nature of local fossil-bearing section; Torrejonian–Tiffanian NALMA transition; geochemical concepts of uranium roll-fronts; taphonomic importance of roll-fronts; recognizing the Paleocene–Eocene boundary globally; and relevance of all this detail to paleobiology.

Day 2 — Margins of Simpson Ridge anticline (east-central Hanna Basin, northwestern Carbon Basin, southeastern Hanna Basin). Big-picture geologic setting; recognition of out-of-the-basin thrusting at multiple scales; significance of stratigraphic curtailment caused by down-section thrust vergence; appreciating blessings of marker beds; recognition of thrusting-related stratigraphic curtailment within largely unexposed sections; interpreting meanings of sudden changes in stratigraphic dip; recognition of overturned strata; coping with geopetal surprises during mapping; judging just where to measure a representative section; view toward eastern edge of Dana klippe and consideration of its paleogeographic significance; and relevance of all this detail to paleobiology.

Day 3 — Along uppermost reaches of Seminoe Reservoir (west-central Hanna Basin). Big-picture geologic setting; viewing a gloriously undeformed and unequivocally superposed, fossil-rich section; Lancian–Puercan boundary and its global implications; validity of subdivisions of Puercan NALMA; regional and more distant paleogeography of Puercan NALMA (faunal alliances with Denver Basin, Williston Basin, San Juan Basin, Chinese equivalents, etc.); value of such sections to other disciplines within paleobiology (especially invertebrates, palynology, macrofloras); view to western edge of Dana klippe and consideration of its paleogeographic significance; and relevance of all this detail to paleobiology.

Number of participants: Because of the need to keep the group together within a complex terrain, the number of participants must be limited to approximately 35.

Cost per participant, which will include transportation in the field, three nights lodging at The Virginian Hotel in Medicine Bow, breakfast and packed lunches (dinner not included), and field guides will be $400. A limited number of scholarships for student members will be available. Applications for participation must be submitted electronically to Annalisa Berta by April 30, 2008.
